Connecting us to those around us, while giving us the space to realise that we have everything that we need to live a full and meaningful life. Kundalini is translated from Sanskrit meaning ‘coiled snake’. Early eastern belief was that this ‘coiled’ energy lay dormant at the base of the spine. Kundalini Yoga works on connecting us to this divine energy within us, moving it up and down the spine, working on releasing blocks where this energy can get stuck and inhibit this natural mind-body-soul connection.
A Kundalini Yoga class is quite different compared to other yoga classes that you may have been to. Each class combines asanas (postures), pranayama (breathing techniques), mudras (hand gestures), mantra (chanting), relaxation and meditation to become physically, emotionally and mentally resilient. Although each class is quite different the class structure is always the same. A class begins by ‘tuning in’ with mantra followed by a warm up set. Then a kriya (set of postures put together achieve a specific outcome) is taught. The kriyas are designed to challenge you – often with repetitive postures synced with dynamic breath-work. Following the kriya there is relaxation and usually a meditation. A Kundalini class is then always sealed with ‘The Long Time Sun’ song. Every class is different and designed to work on a specific aspect of your physically, emotionally or mentally. The majority of Kundalini Yoga classes are practiced with eyes closed, allowing students to project inward and connect with your true self, your Sat Nam.
